Scholarly exchange in Medicine: Can we talk?

In the medical profession, ideological and social pressures, rather than scholarly dialogue, has driven the uptake of affirming youth gender medicine. Offering affirming treatments coincided with an unprecedented increase bodily discomfort in young people, seemingly related to young peoples' more disembodied and social media centered lives. Increased emotional distress and disrupted identity development fueled a surge in patient demand for gender-related treatments. Time will be needed to judge what treatment best match which patients, or whether these treatment were ever appropriate. Regardless of the specific patient outcomes, this episode displays that reforms are required to restore thoughtful exchange within organized medicine and to de-politicize the medical professional organizations.
